You should run reports that let you see your past year's finances. It's a good idea to save your backup to Dropbox or your iCloud Drive. To begin the process go to File menu → Save a Backup. This ensures that you will have a backup copy that includes that year's finances. It's a good idea to back up your transactions at the end of the year.
